Here is the easiest plumbing maintenance you can do yourself at home or in the workplace: Check your tap aerator!
You will find them in all up to date faucets. What does an aerator do? A tap aerator works as a mini screen to collect debris and the shape of it mixes air with water to stop it from splattering all over the place. A clean tap aerator helps with the flow and cleanliness of your drinking water. Fun fact, they can also help reduce your water usage by restricting the flow.
If you are not happy with the flow or pressure from your taps, chances are your tap aerators are blocked. Many of us are actually drinking water that is filtering through gunk on the daily and not even knowing about it. EEEWWWW! This is why it is crucial to clean them regularly. If you haven’t done it. Please do it right away. If you don’t know know how, read below for a couple of pointers or call us to attend and we will sort it out for you.
How to check your tap aerator:
Unscrew the tap aerators in an anti clockwise motion. Standard taps will require a shifter or an adjustable wrench. Some taps will require a specific key (see pic above). If so, check in your vanity drawer/cupboard - us plumbers normally leave them in there when they are installed!
Pull them apart and clean them thoroughly. It works best to turn them upside down and flush them with running water.
Put them back into place with the washers in tact.
Make sure you screw them all the way home WITHOUT cross threading them. You shouldn’t have to “fauc-et” (pun intended).
